Amelia Island rental questions

Answers to many questions people ask about visiting the island.

What is the best month to visit?

The most popular times are during late Spring through early Fall, which is usually when it’s warmest and thus excellent beach weather. The schedule also coincides with summer vacation for those with children.

September still often has temperatures in the mid-to-upper 80s which can be warm enough to enjoy the ocean.

If you’re looking to relax but not necessarily get in the ocean, late winter and early spring can be excellent times to explore the area with less foot traffic.

Do you need a car?

Unless you’re in a rental near the beach and nearby amenities you want to explore, we strongly recommend it. The island is 13 miles long, after all!

What airport do you fly into?

The airport is the Fernandina Beach Municipal Airport, which is just a few miles from downtown.

Does Amelia Island get crowded?

Generally, no. Certain areas – such as downtown or the most popular beaches – might be crowded during an event (hello, Shrimp Fest!) or a peak season like middle of July.

But one of the perks of vacationing here is the lack of foot traffic compared to areas like Hilton Head or Jacksonville.

Is Amelia Island expensive?

No. Rentals on the island tend to be cheaper than you’d find in other vacation areas – factors also depend on what you’re looking for, such as proximity to the beach or size of the rental.

Many of the things to do are very reasonably priced, as well, with many options for a wide range of interests.

Is there a shuttle from Jacksonville Airport to Amelia Island?

Yes, there are multiple companies who provide an option to and from the island.

What part of Amelia Island is best?

That depends on what you’re hoping to do.

For those hoping to unwind on the beach, listen to the waves, and maybe enjoy downtown or eat out from time to time, you’ll want to look towards the North End of the island. It’s closer to downtown and so you’ll spend less time traveling.

If you’re hoping to do more family activities, then the middle of the island may be where you spend much of your time.

Love history? Amelia Island State Park is a wonderful place to spend a day – it’s on the South side.

Amelia Island Beach-related questions

Specific to the beaches, parks, and other outdoor areas you’ll love to visit.

What is the difference between Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach?

The difference between Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island as seen on Google Maps

The difference is simple: Fernandina Beach is a city on the island and centers on the downtown area. It contains multiple beach access points, but is one part of the island.

For instance, if you stay on the South side of the island, you won’t be in Fernandina Beach (such as is one of our rentals or while visiting Amelia Island State Park), but will still very much be on Amelia Island.

Do people swim at Fernandina Beach?

Yes, people can swim at Fernandina Beach via one of the beach access points. However, Fernandina Beach itself is a city on the island.

Can you drink alcohol on Amelia Island?

Yes, but not on the beach. The island features multiple restaurants, bars, and tasting rooms well worth your time. We do ask you follow the local laws concerning parks and beach areas.

Is Amelia Island water clear?

Near the shore, it can be fairly clear on calmer days – kids and adults both getting to see everything happening in the water as they stand in it.

Typically the water is darker, and on windy days (which are common) the waves churn up plenty of sand and dirt as well.

Does Amelia Island have white sand beaches?

Yes, we do! Some beaches may appear lighter or darker depending on recent weather, but you’ll love whichever beach you chose.

Is Fernandina Beach white sand?

It is. Fernandina Beach boasts white sand and multiple access points, providing plenty of easy ways to enjoy it to the fullest. You may also want to look into some of our rentals 🙂
